The Owl Club of Denver, Colorado came into existence in 1942 at the prestigious University Club as the outgrowth of an after-work Saturday night poker game made up by a group of black waiters who had become friends. In time prominent local black leaders and businessmen became members of the group and beginning in 1951 the group selected its first ten ladies from Manual and East High Schools on the basis of scholastic performance and community service rather than socioeconomic status for a debutante ball.
